Box Lunch (North Eastham, MA)

Route 6
North Eastham, Massachusetts

website

The Box Lunch serves wraps or as they call them, rollwiches. After reading through the many items, the Californian ($6.39) appealed to me the most: turkey, mayo, tomatoes, avocado & alfalfa sprouts. I paid extra and added bacon. The combination of ingredients was awesome. I loved the saltiness of the bacon, the creaminess of the avocado and the earthiness of the sprouts. The turkey also tasted like it was of high quality.

It was only when I came back the second time and ordered the same wrap, but asked for whole wheat that I realized that my first rollwich was a pita and the second time a tortilla. I preferred the pita much better. However, it didn't matter much since the second time I tried to eat it was on the day of L's wedding and I couldn't stomach much more than half anyway...!

The Box Lunch has many locations across Cape Cod. It also has a largeselection of Cape Cod chips not available elsewhere (perfect for the chip lover like me)! If you're looking for a lunch to bring the beach, this is the perfect place to stop by!

Curried Vegetables and Goat Cheese Baguette

I realize it's been a while since I've posted a recipe and this one has been a long time coming. I learned a few vegetarian recipes from my ex-rommate, aka Trapezista, including this very easy and delicious sandwich recipe. Curried vegetables combined with goat cheese make a perfect sandwich. Throw in some oven roasted fries and you have a great meal!

Curried Vegetables and Goat Cheese Baguette
It barely takes any effort. You just need a nice crusty baguette and goat cheese in hand.

* zucchini, sliced lengthwise
* red pepper, quartered
* curry powder
* mayo
* goat cheese
* baguette, cut into 6" sections

For the vegetables
Sauté zucchini and red pepper with curry powder, to taste, until cooked.

For the curried mayo
Mix mayo and curry powder and set aside.

Assembling the sandwich
Slice baguette lengthwise, but not right through.
Spread one half of the bread with goat cheese.
Bake in the oven at 350F for 5-7 minutes, until the goat cheese softens and gets gooey.
Spread the other half of the bread with curried mayo.
Place a few pieces of the pepper and zucchini in the baguette.
Serve the baguette with more curried mayo.
Tada!

BLT with pesto mayo

What do I enjoy most about growing tomatoes? Making BLT's!! I've mentioned I like my salt and I like my bacon. There's nothing better than having a BLT with fresh tomatoes!

BLT
I realize there's nothing difficult about making a BLT. I did make mine a bit more unique by making a pesto mayo. I'm obsessed with pesto right now having basil in my garden. I've also just added basil in the sandwich instead of mixing the pesto in.

* 1 tsp pesto (preferably homemade)
* 1 tbsp mayo
* 2 slices of bread, toasted
* bacon, cooked until crips and patted dry
* tomato, sliced
* salt and pepper, to taste
* lettuce leaf

Mix pesto and mayo to make pesto mayo.
Spread over one slice of bread
Lay the bacon on top
Top with tomato slices. (optional: season with salt and pepper)
Place the lettuce on top.
Slice diagonally.
Tada!

Staropolskie Delikatesy

711 Barton Street East
Hamilton, Ontario
905.545.4955

My sister lived in Hamilton for a little over a year. While she was here, she would often go grab a sandwich at Staropolskie Delikatesy with her Polish colleague. Staropolskie does brisk business at lunch time with all the steel workers around. Their sandwiches cost around $4, which actually includes two sandwiches. What a steal!

My sister also introduced me to kielbasa from Staropolskie. I had never had kielbasa before! Kielbasa are Polish sausages that are very flavoured with with garlic and pepper (you whole fridge will smell like kielbasa if you buy some). We try to stick to the leaner ones and one of our favourites is Staropolska kielbasa.

For my sister (and co.)'s second day in Hamilton, we decided to go on a hike up to Dundas Peak. Beforehand, we went to grab sandwiches for lunch. While the twins shared a turkey sandwich and my sister got a ham sandwich, I debated between getting the breaded chicken and what they called hamburger (which was also breaded). I decided on the chicken sandwich but the Polish lady gave me the hamburger instead. I'm glad she made the mistake because I really liked my sandwich. The ground meat was well flavoured but did not taste like a hamburger at all! The sandwiches are made with rye bread and a piece of cheese is added. They also come with a complimentary piece of sausage.

This is half of a half-sandwich. Does that make sense?

After our hiking effort, we got to eat!

We enjoyed the Staropolska kielbasa at home later on. It's embarrassing how much kielbasa I can eat. I can just start slicing and never stop! This kielbasa, studded with flakes of black pepper, was very good indeed!

Grilled Vegetable and Chicken Panini

Most of the time I take my time when I make a purchase. Be it clothing or an accessory for my house, I have to ponder it, determine whether it's just right and wait for the right price. Most of the time... Sometimes though, I make an impulsive purchase. Usually, it's something I see and feel that I need, that I must have, right here, right now, regardless of the price. Sometimes it's a coat from Banana Republic; other times it's shiny and promises to make perfect paninis. That's what happened when I bought my panini maker about 4 years ago at Williams-Sonoma.

I wish I could say I have been eating paninis daily, or at least weekly, ever since I purchased it. I wish I could say it's really convenient. The truth is, it stays in my cabinet because it's kind of big. It's a bit of a pain to clean because I cannot remove the grill. And I have to really wipe it down to make it shiny again. This doesn't make me love it less. The rare times I do make paninis, it makes me happy. Especially when I make chocolate paninis. It makes perfect grill marks.

Grilled Vegetable and Chickend Panini
Paninis are actually really easy to make. They require assembly rather than cooking. You just have to figure out what ingredients you want. There is a multitude of combinations. I also made Monte Cristo sandwiches in the panini maker.

* any bread - I used rosemary foccacia
* pesto - basil or sun dried tomato
* chicken - I bought a roast chicken and sliced the breast
* grilled vegetables - I used a red pepper and zucchini
* cheese - I used Swiss the first time and mozzarella the second time

Slice your bread in individual portions.
Slice horizontally.
Spread pesto on one side.
Top with the chicken, the vegetables and then the cheese.
Place the other piece of bread on top.
Place in the panini maker and press until the cheese is melted.
Tada!

Buy a rotisserie chickend and slice.
